The 3KO Broadway Theatre company presents the world premier of Sy Rosen's black comedy THE L.A. WEEKLY LOVES US, a play about a murder within a theater company.
The theater company in question is located somewhere in "The Valley". While setting up for a play, a murder has taken place. It seems that one of the cast members, a young woman who also plays double duty as a set dresser, gets into a scuffle with another cast member/set dresser over on how a picture hangs up on the set. He is stabbed to death with a pair of scissors. So the woman is brought to trial. While the witnesses are rounded up while being crossed examined by the woman's lawyer and the D.A., a series of flashbacks is presented showing that this theater company, consisting of a number of young (and not so young) actors (many of them have "real" jobs as well as their own personal issues) who want to create and act in their own performances for their playhouse. But the real question stands if this woman is innocent of this crime, and if she really did it and what was the cause?
This play is one part courtroom drama, one part love story (soft of), and one part as a "behind the scenes" comedy of what really goes on within a small theater company located in a town full of actors looking for their "big break" somewhere! The playwright Sy Rosen who has written for TV sitcoms for a number of years, creates a comical play that has a lot of humorous little episodes, some of which are gems in their own right! (A scene where, again told in flashback, the ensemble gives ideas on the shows they want to see presented, including a play about murderer Scott Peterson and a musical on Condoleezza Rice, is funny enough for an entire production as they are!) There are also some inside gags about local theater in Los Angeles (you might catch a few of these tidbits) as well as some of the plays that small theater companies usually present. In short, this is an amusing little piece that makes fun out of courtroom dramas and the industry of acting!
The ensemble cast in this production consist of (in alphabetical order) Steve Ferguson, Steve Hofvendahl, Jennifer Lynn Jones, Barbara Keegan, Ben Kenber, Jason Lovett, Johnny Mardo, Clare Meehan, Amy Oldman, Bree Pavey, Sy Rosen, Simone Sullivan, and Dan Westerman.
The title of this play refers to this "Valley" theater company raving that a local alternative weekly newspaper loves their shows--or should love their shows! We here at "Accessibly Live Off-Line" finds that this production is amusing and very original. It's not often that any little theater company even acknowledges that there are other theater groups out there competing for the same audience that normally attend such shows comparing to what the "big" theater companies located in downtown can put out! Nevertheless, THE L.A. WEEKLY LOVES US is a treat. And yes, "ALO-L" loves them too. However, this publication won't get its name placed on the title. Then again, we didn't get our name up there just because we never asked 'em! (Can you take a hint you guys??)
