  1. How did your company get started?
We began to meet regularly in January of 2000 as a group of actors and writers in a weekly workshop to develop new performance material. The original members were borne out of sketch comedy performance lab and another workshop in Hollywood. We came together as a group at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre in Burbank and consequently took the name, “The Sidewalk Theatre Company.” The weekly workshop continues to this day and we have produced at least one original collaborative performance piece every season since our inception. [back to questions]
  2. Why 3KO Broadway Theatre Company?
We changed our name in 2002 out of necessity. The owner of the Sidewalk space moved on and sold the lease and the contents to a new cooperative and he actually owned the name “Sidewalk Theatre.” We moved on as well, producing our 3rd season at the Players Space in North Hollywood. Consequently, we needed to change our name and 3KO Broadway Theatre Company was proposed along with several others and after much debate… [back to questions]
  3. What does the 3KO mean? Three knockouts?
Yes. We wanted to infuse a boxing theme in all of our work. We run our own little “fight club” after each performance. Audience participation is optional. But seriously, it’s an acronym for 3000 miles off Broadway. As we all know, there’s Broadway, Off Broadway, Off-Off Broadway, but not many people know that there’s a thriving theater scene three thousand miles off Broadway here in LA. It’s about as non-commercial as you can get and we like to think that we embody the avant-garde spirit of the name. [back to questions]
  4. The Sidewalk Studio? I thought you had left that theater for North Hollywood?
Well, that’s another story. We came back to Sidewalk last year for a number of reasons. Suffice to say that our original home is again our current home. We hope to stay a while until we can get our own permanent space. [back to questions]
  5. What sets your company apart from all the other 99-seat companies in LA?
The most obvious element is our company workshop. We meet every Wednesday night and have been doing so since the beginning. As a member of some of the other companies in town, an actor might get to work on one show every two years if he or she is lucky. In 3KO, everyone can work on a weekly basis if they wish. We nurture writing, (an integral part of our workshops), scenes, monologues, cold readings, staged readings, you name it. It’s a great way to keep your chops up, network, get support, laugh, cry, whatever you need to do that week. Artistically, we strive to produce exciting theatre in an exciting way. Sounds simple but it’s like the Holy Grail. That “way” is our focus on the environmental theater premise. We want the audience to be enveloped in the play; drawn in physically. The action of many of our productions takes place in the house, the wings, the lobby, the restroom, and even on stage, sometimes. The audience is thrust into the world of the play, as it were. In our next production, you experience THE LA WEEKLY LOVES US the moment you step into the lobby; you can see that by our design of the entire space. [back to questions]
  6. What’s next for 3KO?
Well, we incorporated as a non-profit and got our 501(c)(3) status from the feds about two years ago and we’d like to build on that in the arena of grants and the like. Producing on shoestring is difficult and a little financial support from those with the money is our immediate goal. In the meantime, we want to continue to produce the kind of theater that challenges us as artists and inspires our audience. And if we find the next David Mamet or Death of a Salesman along the way, then great! We welcome abundance. [back to questions]
  7. How can I make a donation?
Well, we incorporated as a non-profit and got our 501(c)(3) status you can simply donate securly through paypal by clicking here. or buy from our online store from cafepress and of course come to see our shows. [back to questions]
